GPS or to give it its full name "Global Positioning System" has provided us all with the ability to find where we are situated in the world. It can also track our movements and supply us with directions to other places. Equally, the GPS system was introduced to the world of Amateur Radio either as an add-on device to our radio equipment or as a feature of modern communications equipment.
Radio Amateurs therefore will transmit their positions either as a static station at home or using any type of transport or even walking using a handheld transceiver. The collected data is then sent to the internet or recorded locally on a personal computer at regular intervals. A system known as APRS - Automatic Packet Reporting System computes this data and a website https://aprs.fi shows a Google Map with all activity on it. Both Radio Stations and Weather Stations are seen here together with another system called CWOP - Citizen Weather Observer Program. Here is a link to a live stream of data world wide - Click Here
On the map Weather Stations with a blue icon "WX" are shown and my own station is named G4MHJ-1. Whenever I switch on other equipment, whether here at home or elsewhere my postion is shown. The named station will always be G4MHJ with various other suffixes such as -B, -8 or -D. Adding G4MHJ* to the Track Callsign will show all my activity although other than -1, the others may not be seen very much. Sometimes the map display below is slow in responding in which case clicking on the Track Callsign - Search button usually opens it. On the map you are able to click on links within the white pop-up to show more detail. Also on the map are the positions of ships and aircraft taken at the time of an upload so like other items they are not live.
Because this feature covers both Weather and Radio subjects there is a link on both tabs.
